VENETIAN PLASTER

Originating in Venice, Italy, Venetian plaster gained widespread popularity in the Roman Empire as a means to imitate natural stone surfaces inside of palazzos, villas, and cathedrals. Artisans would blend lime plaster with marble dust and pigments to create the compound Venetian plaster, then trowel it onto walls or ceilings in multiple thin layers with short, overlapping strokes. Professional painters still use this authentic method today for the interior walls and ceilings in living rooms, bedrooms, and bathrooms. With Venetian Plaster you’re sure to end up with the luxurious look of natural stone.
However: what we know now as Venetian Plaster it’s the synthetic version, it is more reflective than the original Venetian Plaster (Lime Plaster), it can also achieve richer colours due to it’s composition which is mainly Acrylic. The natural Venetian Plaster is known as Lime Plaster or Marmorino.

LIME PLASTER

Lime Plaster is a type of plaster composed of: Sand, Water and Lime. Ancient Lime Plaster often contained horse hair for reinforcement. What we call now Lime Plaster or Marmorino OR Encausto it’s the original Venetian Plaster mined in the Venice region in Northern Italy. Depending on the size of the sand added the Lime Plaster comes in 4 different thickness: Coarse, Medium, Fine and Extra Fine. The finer the plaster, the more shiny finish is achievable. A slurry Lime Plaster is Lime Paint or can be used for lime wash over bricks and other surfaces that can absorb the mineral. The Lime Plaster is: Antimicrobial, Non Combustible and Mildew Resistant. The Lime Plaster is 100% Natural. The Lime Plaster is very versatile in a sense that, many Finishes can be achieved just with different tools used or techniques. In addition, the Lime Plaster can be sealed or top coated with Metallic Plasters to achieve different looks.
